Hertfordshire Fire and Rescue Service’s fire safety community volunteer scheme is one of the many Hertfordshire projects that will be celebrating UK Inspire Day on 16 May.
UK Inspire Day is a celebration of the London 2012 Inspire programme, which recognises and rewards exceptional, non-commercial projects that have been inspired by the London 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games.
Motivated by the London 2012 drive to encourage volunteering, Hertfordshire Fire and Rescue Service’s fire safety community volunteer scheme has been welcoming new recruits and, as a result, was awarded the coveted London 2012 Inspire mark, the badge of the London 2012 Inspire programme, in February 2012.
Launched in January 2008, the scheme now has more than 100 volunteers who give eight hours of their time every month to help raise awareness of fire safety across the county. This is done through a range of activities including attending community events, supporting local fire safety campaigns and encouraging people who are most at risk from a fire in the home to book a free home fire safety check.
Seb Coe, Chair of the London Organising Committee of the Olympic Games and Paralympic Games said: ‘Hertfordshire Fire and Rescue Service’s fire safety community volunteer scheme is one of over two thousand seven hundred projects using the Inspire mark across the United Kingdom. I’d like to thank them for all their support and hard work using the power of the Games to inspire change.”
Richard Thake, Hertfordshire County Council’s Cabinet Member for Community Safety, said: “It was a great honour when Hertfordshire’s fire safety volunteer scheme was given the official Inspire mark earlier this year. The endorsement shows what a good volunteering project we run and the people who get involved deserve to be recognised and celebrated.”
Hertfordshire’s fire safety volunteer scheme is not the only outstanding Hertfordshire project that will be celebrating on 16 May; 36 projects in county have been granted the London 2012 Inspire Mark for their innovative work. One of these is ‘Win Business Gold’ a series of popular breakfast events run throughout the county by Hertfordshire is Ready for Winners. The breakfasts give business delegates a chance to enjoy a cooked breakfast whilst learning more about London 2012 contract opportunities, how to prepare their businesses for the Games and also gives them the opportunity to meet young talented athletes from the Hertfordshire area. They have had an Inspire Mark for two and a half years.
The Olympic inspired school catering project, ‘The Good School Food Gold Medal Challenge’, has also been awarded the prestigious mark. Designed by Hertfordshire Catering and Hertfordshire is Ready for Winners, the venture encourages pupils to pay tribute to past gold medal winners as part of a healthy eating in schools initiative.
Another project that has been recognised is ‘Muscle Dreams’, who, in connection with the Herts based charity The Muscle Help Foundation, offer unforgettable experiences to young people in the UK suffering from Muscular Dystrophy.
