Hertfordshire has set the standard for the Government’s new School Games initiative. Friday 17th June saw school children from across the county competing in the first of nine regional pilot events at the University of Hertfordshire in Hatfield, under the watchful eye of Jeremy Hunt, Secretary of State for Culture, Media and Sport, Olympians Darren Campbell and Mark Richardson and Paralympians Ade Adepitan and Helen Freeman.
The Herts School Games were organised by Herts Sports Partnership and saw school children across the county competing in a number of sports including boccia, cricket, golf, hockey, swimming tennis and volleyball.
The new School Games are designed to ‘bring the magic of the Olympics’ to the country’s school children and Hertfordshire’s Games took this quite literally. One of the events included as part of the School Games programme was a flat water canoe sprint race at the Lee Valley White Water Centre.
Eight pupils from five of the county’s schools battled it out on the lake at the newly opened White Water Centre in Waltham Cross, Hertfordshire that will host the canoe slalom event at next year’s London 2012 Olympic Games. The Hertfordshire is Ready for Winners Partnership set up the event with the help of Jeff Toser from Canoe England and Gary Aldham from Bishop’s Stortford Canoe Club who supplied the kit for the event..
Chairman of the Herts is Ready for Winner Board, Derrick Ashley said, “The canoe sprint event as part of the School Games was a great way of getting local kids involved and using the county’s Olympic venue. The School Games and the Lee Valley White Water Centre are very much focussed on Olympic legacy and this is a great example of what can be achieved.”
The paddlers were presented with certificates and London 2012 mascot pin badges to recognise their participation and also met Team GB paddlers, Lizzie Neave and David Florence.
