Network Schools across Hertfordshire had the opportunity to be among the first to ride the rapids at the recently opened Lee Valley White Water Centre yesterday (Tuesday 5th July) as part of the Lee Valley’s Schools Festival. Thousands of school children from across Hertfordshire, Essex and London have been given the unique chance to try out adrenalin-pumping white water rafting for free at the White Water Centre.
Lee Valley launched their Schools Festival in October and offered Education Authorities in Hertfordshire, Essex and London the chance to select a class of secondary school students, aged 14 plus, from each borough or district, to experience a FREE rafting session on the Olympic Standard Competition Course. In Hertfordshire, Lee Valley Regional Park Authority worked closely with The Hertfordshire is Ready for Winners Partnership to offer the places to schools that had shown commitment to the London 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games and had joined the Get Set Network.
In addition to white water rafting students at the festival learnt about the venue and the Olympic and Paralympic Games, plus enjoying a range of exciting activities on site such as GPS orienteering, a climbing wall, Tottenham Hotspur football challenge and taster sessions with Canoe England.
Hertfordshire is Ready for Winners spoke to one raft just after it had gone down the Olympic Standard Course full of students and teachers from Get Set Network School Sele in Hertford. Steve Millar, Head of PE at the school said, “Thanks so much for today - Our students had a great time and a fabulous experience! I think this will be one of those things that they will look back and remember from their time at school.”
One of the students described it as “the best school trip he had ever been on”, whilst others said the rapids were “awesome” and that even though admitting to being a bit scared one of the students said, “The instructor was great and the rapids were fantastic - it’s something I would never have done on my own”.
