After the great success of the Good School Food Gold Medal Challenge last month now it is the turn of Secondary Schools across Hertfordshire.
Designed by Hertfordshire’s Good School Food Team and Hertfordshire is Ready for Winners, the Good School Food Gold Medal Challenge encourages students to pay tribute to past gold medal winners. As part of the challenge, every pupil who eats a school lunch during the two week period is entered into a draw to win one of over 40 great, official London 2012 prize packs.
As part of the challenge, school students’ palates will be traveling around the globe from France to Mexico and South Africa to China. The challenge finishes on Friday 4 May with Team GB day where a traditional Great British favourite fish and chips will be served as part of the celebrations.
Giles Long MBE, World, European and Paralympic Gold Medallist, launched this initiative in January at Hertfordshire’s Olympic venue the Lee Valley White Water Centre saying, “Being the best is about paying attention to detail and food is one of those details. Sport is about getting the maximum you can out of your body and the right food as fuel is vital in that process. That is why I’m delighted to support this initiative.”
The, The Good School Food Gold Medal Challenge primary school campaign ran for two weeks in March and saw Hertfordshire Catering serve a massive 40,000 EXTRA meals during March pupils collected stickers and completed quizzes in order to get their hands on an Olympic themed prize.
The inventive catering initiative has been awarded an Inspire Mark by London 2012. The London 2012 Inspire programme recognises innovative and exceptional projects that are directly inspired by the 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games and Hertfordshire Catering is the only local authority catering organisation in the country to be awarded the coveted Inspire Mark.
Lin O’Brien, Head of Hertfordshire Catering says “I’m very proud of our achievement at being awarded this coveted Inspired by London 2012’ mark. I hope that all pupils and students in Hertfordshire really enjoy our inspirational and innovative programme – the benefits of eating a healthy diet and exercising is widely reported, but to be able to offer our young people the chance to have fun and to be excited about these two lifestyle aspects is something Hertfordshire Catering are hugely committed to.”
