Artists and guests attended the launch of 'From the Drawing Room to the Podium’, which was produced by people with physical disabilities and learning difficulties who attend St Elizabeth's Centre Day Services, Much Hadham.
The Drawing Room, a social enterprise, which develops the confidence and self-expression of people with epilepsy and other complex needs through art, originally commissioned the artwork for the Olympic-themed competition ‘Going for Gold’.
A number of the pieces produced have already been exhibited at the Tate Modern with all three awards for 'Best in Show' going to artists from St Elizabeth’s.
The showcase of Olympic-themed artwork, which was launched on Monday September 19, has been awarded an ‘Inspire Mark’ by the London Organising Committee for the Games (LOCOG). The exhibition runs for one month until Wednesday 19 October, at WaterWorks Nature Reserve and Golf Centre, Leyton, from 9am until 6pm Monday to Sunday.
Chairman of the Hertfordshire is Ready for Winners Board, Derrick Ashley, said: “The exceptional talent shown by the artists from St Elizabeth’s is something that we in Hertfordshire should be shouting about with pride. I think it only right that the exhibition has been awarded an Inspire Mark by LOCOG. This exhibition showcases the county’s talent; something that has hung in a national art gallery should be celebrated locally.”
Niki Rice, Lead Instructor with The Drawing Room, said: “I am very proud of all St Elizabeth’s college learners, adult residents and day clients involved in creating the paintings and ceramics for this competition; it is a wonderful achievement to be asked to exhibit their work.”
Herts 2012 Manager Gareth Morgan organised the event in partnership with Lee Valley regional park Authority and St Elizabeth’s. He said: “This exhibition and the artwork produced by the St Elizabeth’s community should be an inspiration to all and showcases how individual and group interpretation of The London Olympic and Paralympic Games can be expressed through art to great effect. I hope this exhibition will inspire other disability art groups to express their own celebration of the Games in this way."
