Herts is Ready for Winners caught up with members of the GB Senior Canoe Slalom Team during their time trial event which was held at Hatfield Swim Centre. HRFW managed to locate a pool of the correct proportions for the BCU to train in close to the Lee Valley White Water Centre in Waltham Cross where the team are now based. The paddlers were comparing times that they recorded while doing a similar exercise in Loughborough earlier in the year.
We caught up with Olympian Fiona Pennie shortly after she had completed her time trial. Fiona has been paddling since the age of nine getting the bug from her mother who competed in flat water sprint racing. Fiona has settled in at the Lee Valley White Water Centre now, saying it is the toughest course in the world.
“I’m so happy that we have a world class facility in Britain at last,” states Pennie, “the course is really challenging and the configuration of the course is changed constantly – one of the big advantages of being a man made course. I can personally tell how challenging the course is - I’ve put on 2kg of muscle in two months!
“Having the course is great for a canoeing legacy in the UK, the courses in Scotland, Wales and Nottingham can help get young people interested and on top of that there is now the LV WWC and the centres in Cardiff and Tayside are being re-vamped. There will be much greater opportunities for us at the BCU to train in the future.”
Fiona represented team GB in Beijing in the K1 event and is hoping to make it London 2012, however, the selection process is tough.
“There are four of us competing for one place this time, Lizzie (Neave) and Louise (Donington) are new, for Beijing there were two of us going for one place.”
Next month Fiona is looking towards selection for the World Championships in Bratislava, Slovakia, the selection races are at the Lee Valley White Water Centre in April.
